Leaders — Give Yourself a Break!

As a leader, you’ve probably spent most of the last 15+ months watching out for the needs of others—your team, your colleagues, and your family. In her June 28 “Your Best Next Move” video, Bobbie LaPorte explains why it’s so important to give yourself a break—and to celebrate the successes you’ve achieved during these exceptionally challenging times.

TRANSCRIPT OF “YOUR BEST NEXT MOVE: LEADERS — GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK”

Hi, everyone. Bobbie LaPorte here again with my weekly tips for “Your Best Next Move,” where I help you have more agency in your work, acknowledge your capacity to act, and see what you can do right now.

(So all of a sudden, as I started this, about 100 boats came from both directions right behind me. I think it’s a wedding, which is actually pretty cool. You can only see part of it.)

This week’s tip is intentionally brief…and it’s all about YOU. Let’s face it: even in the best of times, being a leader is a tough job. Most leaders I know focus exclusively on their team, which is understandable, but that often means neglecting their own needs.

And over the last year-plus, your job has been magnified as you had to deal with things like moving to remote work and all that. That means resetting expectations, deliverables, time frames, providing emotional steadiness for your team, managing fear and anxiety over COVID, and trying to keep everyone safe and dealing with the unrelenting uncertainty of not knowing what’s next and how to respond. And I could go on.

And yet, as I’ve been speaking with leaders recently and acknowledged all they’ve accomplished during this time, many feel like they’re still not doing enough. They are reluctant to accept recognition of their success during this unprecedented, challenging time.

So with all of that, here’s my tip

It’s time to give yourself a break. Stop and reflect on all that’s happened over the last 15 plus months. Acknowledge the significant challenges you’ve overcome. Appreciate the journey you’ve been on with your team and look ahead with optimism…even if it’s cautious optimism.

Celebrate the successes you’ve achieved. Everyone can be boosted up by successes as we head into the next phase and set of challenges of our work. And most importantly, give yourself pat on the back. (And if you need someone else to help do that for you, shoot me an email, and I’ll give you the kudos you deserve.)

I want 2021 to be a year momentum for you…one of possibility thinking, where you take advantage of the agency we sometimes forget we have. That’s my tip for this week. I’ll see you next week…and give yourself a pat on the back!
